India’s coal production has crossed the one-billion-tonne mark following the introduction of commercial coal mining, marking a major milestone in the country’s energy sector. The Ministry of Coal said that since the launch of commercial mining in June 2020, 141 commercial coal mines have been auctioned in 14 rounds, strengthening domestic production and reducing dependence on imports.
Coal Auctions Expanded Private Participation
According to the ministry, India’s coal production stood at 1,047.52 million tonnes in FY2024-25 and 1,040.08 million tonnes in FY2025-26, compared with 609.18 million tonnes in FY2014-15. The share of captive and commercial mines in national coal production increased from 10.9% in FY2021-22 to 20.2% in FY2025-26. Of the 141 auctioned mines, 123 were awarded to private companies, while 44 successful bidders entered the coal mining sector for the first time.
Production, Investment and Revenue Increased
The auctioned mines have a combined annual production capacity of 366.35 million tonnes. Once fully operational, they are expected to generate nearly 47,000 crore in annual revenue, attract about 48,756 crore in capital investment and create around 4.75 lakh employment opportunities. The ministry also said that premium revenue from coal mining rose from Rs. 461 crore in FY2014-15 to Rs. 5,553 crore in FY2025-26.

Approval Process Was Streamlined to Accelerate Mining
The ministry said commercial coal mining, introduced under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative in June 2020, opened the sector to private companies, allowing them to sell coal in the open market. During FY2025-26, captive and commercial mines together produced a record 210.46 million tonnes, crossing the 200 million-tonne milestone for the first time, with 23 commercial mines currently in production. To speed up project execution, the Government has reduced the operational timeline for fully explored mines from 51 months to 40 months, while partially explored mines can now become operational in 52 months, down from 66 months.
