The agitation against alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC) entered its ninth day on Sunday, with students continuing their indefinite sit-in at Morabadi in Ranchi. The protest gathered political attention after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) backed the students’ demands and called for a CBI investigation into the alleged recruitment scam.
Student Leader Began Indefinite Hunger Strike
Student leader Devendra Nath Mahato announced an indefinite hunger strike, alleging serious irregularities in the 14th JPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination. Addressing protesters, he said questions had emerged after the declaration of the preliminary examination results and demanded cancellation of the examination along with an independent inquiry into JPSC, JSSC Combined Graduate Level (CGL) and other recruitment tests allegedly conducted by the same examination agency. He said the agitation would continue until the government takes concrete action.

BJP Backed Protest, Sought Independent Investigation
Addressing a press conference, BJP national spokesperson Tuhin Sinha said thousands of aspirants had invested years of preparation and, in many cases, made major financial sacrifices to appear for the examinations. BJP and its youth wing, Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), organised demonstrations in several districts, including East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Chatra, demanding a CBI inquiry. Memorandums seeking an independent probe and action against those responsible were also submitted to the Governor through district authorities.

CID Investigation Continued Amid Growing Demands
The protests are taking place alongside an ongoing CID investigation into the 14th JPSC Civil Services examination. The agency has arrested 11 people, including officials and candidates, while former JPSC Chairman L. Khiangte has been questioned on multiple occasions. The commission had earlier postponed the Civil Services Mains examination scheduled for 25th to 27th July 2026 following the controversy. Student groups, however, maintained that their movement is peaceful, democratic and apolitical, and said they would continue the protest until transparency, accountability and reforms are ensured in Jharkhand’s recruitment system.
