Hindalco Industries has started production at India’s first manufacturing plant for Superfine Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate (PPT ATH) in Belagavi, Karnataka. The new facility has a production capacity of 30,000 tonnes a year and is expected to reduce the country’s dependence on imported material used in fire-safe electrical and industrial applications.

Why The New Plant Matters
PPT ATH is used as a halogen-free flame-retardant material in HFFR cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites and paints. In cable applications, it helps slow the spread of fire and reduce smoke without releasing halogen acid gases. The facility’s first-phase capacity of 30,000 tonnes is expected to meet almost the entire domestic requirement of the wire and cable industry. Hindalco has also planned a phased expansion that could take the plant’s capacity to 60,000 tonnes a year.

Demand is Rising Across Several Sectors
The market for fire-safe and halogen-free materials has been growing with the expansion of electrical infrastructure, electric vehicles and other high-performance applications. India’s Bureau of Indian Standards has also introduced IS 17048:2018 for HFFR cables, supporting wider use of such products. Hindalco’s InnoSafe Superfine PPT ATH is aimed at applications where fire safety, smoke control and material performance are important. The company said the product would serve the wire and cable, mobility, infrastructure and industrial sectors.

Plant Runs on Renewable Energy
The Belagavi facility has been developed using technology and research carried out by Hindalco in-house. Automated systems have been installed for key manufacturing processes to maintain product quality and consistency. The plant is powered by 100% renewable energy generated from biomass, solar and wind sources. Hindalco said this would allow the specialty material to be produced with a lower environmental footprint.

Hindalco Expanded its Specialty Alumina Business
Hindalco already produces more than 120 grades of Specialty Alumina and Alumina Hydrates, with an overall production capacity of around 800 kilotonnes a year. The addition of Superfine PPT ATH has expanded its product range into the flame retardant segment. For India, the plant is significant beyond its production capacity. Domestic availability of Superfine PPT ATH gives cable and electrical equipment manufacturers a local source for a material that is increasingly linked to fire safety and modern infrastructure. The planned expansion to 60,000 tonnes could further support demand as these sectors grow.
