Patanjali Expanded into Insurance and Renewable Energy

Patanjali Group has expanded its business portfolio beyond Ayurveda and consumer goods by entering the general insurance and renewable energy sectors. The diversification comes after the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) approved the acquisition of Magma General Insurance by Patanjali Ayurved and the Dharampal Satyapal (DS) Group in a deal valued at around Rs. 4500 crore.

Patanjali Entered General Insurance Business

Under the approved transaction, Patanjali Ayurved will acquire a 73.56% stake in Magma General Insurance, while the DS Group will purchase 24.5% from companies belonging to the Adar Poonawalla Group. Following the acquisition, Patanjali will become the insurer’s promoter and is expected to infuse additional capital to strengthen the company’s solvency and support future expansion. Magma General Insurance reported a gross premium income of Rs. 3,615 crore in FY2026 and offers products across motor, health, personal accident, home and commercial insurance segments.

Company Expanded Presence in Energy Storage

Alongside its insurance venture, Patanjali has also emerged as a new player in India’s renewable energy sector through Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. In Maharashtra, the company secured 100 MW capacity in a tender floated by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) for a 2,000 MW/4,000 MWh standalone BESS project. It quoted a tariff of Rs. 1,65,998 per MW per month.

Diversification Reflected Long-Term Growth Strategy

Patanjali has also won a 250 MW/1,000 MWh standalone BESS project in Rajasthan under a tender floated by Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RRVUNL) on a build-own-operate model, quoting a tariff of Rs. 2,85,000 per MW per month. These investments indicate the group’s strategy to build businesses beyond its core FMCG and wellness operations by entering sectors with long-term growth potential, including financial services and clean energy infrastructure.
