Indian diplomatic missions are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence to improve outreach and simplify consular services for the Indian diaspora. Leading the initiative, the Consulate General of India in Munich has introduced an AI-powered virtual avatar named ‘Sarathi’, which explains passport services, visas, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) procedures, birth registration, police clearance certificates and other consular matters through short video presentations.

AI Videos Made Official Guidance Easier to Understand
According to officials, the initiative was launched about a month ago to make official information more accessible through digital communication. Instead of relying only on text-based advisories, missions are producing concise audio-visual content that helps applicants understand documentation requirements and application procedures more easily. The videos are intended purely as awareness tools and are designed to assist the Indian community abroad with frequently used consular services.

Technology Became a Key Focus of Indian Diplomacy
Officials said the idea gained momentum after discussions at the 11th Heads of Mission Conference organized in April under the theme ‘Reforming Indian Diplomacy for 2047’. During the conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged Indian envoys to focus on tourism, technology and trade. Subsequent brainstorming sessions identified the need for missions to use modern technology to make official communication more engaging, interactive and citizen-centric.

Digital Platforms Expanded Across Indian Missions
The AI video initiative complements a broader digital ecosystem already being adopted by Indian missions worldwide. Several embassies and consulates have integrated tools such as the Government’s Bhashini AI language platform, which enables multilingual translation of text, voice and documents. Missions in New York, Dubai and Hungary have also deployed AI-powered chatbots, including Bharati and Pramit, to answer routine queries related to visas, passports and other consular services. Officials said the objective is to provide authentic information through faster, more visual and user-friendly channels while improving engagement with millions of Indians living overseas.
