Notorious Gangster Sujit Sinha Was Killed in Police Encounter During Jail Transfer

Notorious Jharkhand gangster Sujit Sinha was killed in a police encounter late Sunday night while being shifted from Sahibganj Mandal Jail to Dhanbad Jail. According to police, the incident took place near the Jamtara district border when Sinha allegedly attempted to escape during transit. He was taken to a nearby hospital after sustaining bullet injuries, where doctors declared him dead.

Police Claimed He Snatched a Weapon and Opened Fire

Police said the convoy was halted after Sinha requested permission to use the toilet. During the stop, he allegedly snatched the service weapon of a police personnel and tried to flee. Officials claimed he opened fire while attempting to escape, prompting the escort team to retaliate in self defence. Another account from the police stated that the vehicle developed a mechanical problem during the journey and Sinha attempted to escape while being shifted to another vehicle. Senior officers and a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team later reached the scene, and an inquiry into the sequence of events has begun.

History of Organised Crime Across Jharkhand

Sinha, a resident of Redma in Daltonganj, Palamu, had been lodged in Sahibganj Jail after being shifted from Palamu Central Jail last year. Police records show that he was accused in more than 60 criminal cases across Palamu, Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Latehar, Chatra, Ramgarh and other districts. The cases included allegations of murder, extortion, firing incidents, Arms Act violations and operating an organised criminal network. While he had been acquitted in some cases, several others remain pending before various courts.

Investigation Into Encounter Underway

Police have said the circumstances leading to the encounter are being examined, and all aspects of the incident will be investigated. Authorities are also expected to review the security arrangements during the prison transfer. As the inquiry progresses, further details are likely to emerge regarding the encounter and the events that led to Sinha’s death.
