Hazaribagh Emerged as a Potential Mineral Research Hub and Future Centre for Mineral Research and Innovation

Recent research by the Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ) on extracting rare minerals from coal waste and mining residue has opened fresh possibilities for Hazaribagh, a district known for its coal mining activity and thermal power projects. Experts believe the findings could help transform the region into a centre for mineral research, particularly with the presence of major mining projects such as Pakri Barwadih and large fly ash deposits.

Coal Waste Could Hold Valuable Rare Earth Elements

Researchers say coal fly ash and mining waste generated by thermal power plants may contain commercially important rare earth elements, including cerium. With NTPC operating key projects in the district, Hazaribagh offers favourable conditions for future research into technologies that can recover valuable minerals from industrial waste. Such initiatives could support both resource efficiency and sustainable mining practices.

Industry-Academia Collaboration Could Drive Innovation

Experts believe collaboration between NTPC, research institutions and academic bodies could accelerate the development of mineral separation technologies. If commercial extraction techniques are developed, the district could attract investment in mineral processing, create skilled employment and establish itself as a centre for advanced research in the critical minerals sector.

Universities Expected to Expand Research Focus

Vinoba Bhave University, which has largely focused on the social, environmental and geographical impact of mining, is seen as a key institution that could contribute to this emerging field. Its departments currently study issues such as displacement, groundwater depletion and ecological changes in mining areas. Expanding into applied geological and mineral processing research could benefit students, strengthen local research capabilities and position Hazaribagh as an important contributor to India’s growing critical minerals ecosystem.
