The Odisha Government has stepped up preparations for a major industrial investment with a field inspection of 2,490 acres of land identified for JSW Steel Limited’s proposed 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel plant in Keonjhar district. The inspection, carried out by the Chief General Manager (Land) in Patna tehsil on Sunday, is part of the state’s efforts to accelerate project planning and position Odisha as a leading industrial hub.
Officials Reviewed Land and Project Readiness
During the visit, officials assessed the condition of the identified land, available infrastructure and administrative requirements needed to facilitate the proposed project. The earmarked land is intended for the steel plant and its associated industrial activities. The review focused on ensuring that necessary preparations are completed to enable the project to move forward without delays.

Government Expected Economic Gains
The State Government said the proposed steel plant is expected to generate thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities while giving a fresh push to industrialisation in Keonjhar and neighbouring areas. Officials also expect the project to improve infrastructure, attract further investments and strengthen Odisha’s industrial ecosystem. The government reiterated its commitment to creating an investment friendly environment and expanding industrial infrastructure across the state.

Rehabilitation and Environmental Issues Remained Key Concerns
Even as the project promises economic benefits, questions have emerged over its social and environmental impact. Concerns remain about whether affected farmers, forest dwellers and other landowners will receive fair compensation, proper rehabilitation and sustainable employment opportunities. Environmental experts have also pointed to the need for careful assessment of the project’s impact on local ecosystems, water resources and ecological balance before large-scale development begins.
